ERPNext vs Odoo: Which ERP Fits Businesses in Lebanon and the GCC? (2026)
ERPNext or Odoo? A practical 2026 comparison for growing companies in Lebanon, the UAE and Saudi Arabia: licensing, cost, features, VAT, customization and how to choose.
If your business in Lebanon or the Gulf has outgrown Excel, QuickBooks or an entry-level system, the two ERPs you will hear about most are ERPNext and Odoo. Both are open source at their core, both cover accounting, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, HR and CRM, and both can run in the cloud or on your own server. The real differences are in how they are licensed, how much of the system you get for free, and how easy they are to adapt to the way your company works.
This guide compares the two from the point of view of a growing company in Lebanon, the UAE or Saudi Arabia, so you can shortlist the right one before you talk to an implementation partner.
The short answer
- Choose ERPNext if you want the complete ERP without per-user license fees, a predictable cost as your team grows, and freedom to customize the system deeply.
- Choose Odoo Enterprise if you want the widest app marketplace, a very polished interface out of the box, and you are comfortable paying a license for every internal user.
- Odoo Community (the free edition) is a reasonable start for small teams, but several features growing companies rely on are reserved for the paid Enterprise edition.
Licensing and cost
ERPNext is developed by Frappe Technologies and released under the GPL-3.0 open-source license (source). Every module — accounting, stock, manufacturing, HR, payroll, projects, CRM — is in the same free code base. You pay for hosting, implementation and support, not for user seats.
Odoo has two editions. Odoo Community is free and open source. Odoo Enterprise, which adds many of the features companies expect, is licensed per internal user per month, and the higher plan is required for things like Odoo Studio and broader multi-company setups (source). As your headcount grows, the license becomes a recurring cost line of its own.
For a company with 30 or 50 users, this difference alone often decides the choice. For a 5-person company, it matters much less.
Features growing companies care about
| Need | ERPNext | Odoo |
|---|---|---|
| Accounting, multi-currency (USD/LBP, AED, SAR) | Included | Included; some advanced reports are Enterprise-only |
| Inventory across several warehouses | Included | Included |
| Manufacturing (BOMs, work orders) | Included | Included (some features Enterprise) |
| HR and payroll | Included | Included (payroll mainly Enterprise) |
| Several companies in one system | Included | Supported; larger setups need the higher plan |
| Official mobile app | Responsive web app | Enterprise |
| No-code customization | Custom fields, DocTypes, workflows built in | Odoo Studio (higher plan) |
| App marketplace | Smaller | Very large |
VAT and local requirements
Both systems let you configure tax templates, so they can handle Lebanese VAT, UAE VAT and Saudi VAT, as well as transactions in more than one currency. Lebanese companies in particular often keep books in both US dollars and Lebanese pounds; both ERPs support multi-currency accounting, but the exchange-rate setup and reporting should be planned carefully with your accountant before go-live.
In Saudi Arabia, check that the system and your implementation partner can meet the ZATCA e-invoicing requirements that apply to your business.
Customization and integrations
ERPNext is built on the Frappe framework, which lets you add fields, new document types, approval workflows, print formats and reports from the browser, and build deeper extensions in Python. Odoo is also very extensible, but its most convenient no-code tool, Studio, is part of the paid plan, and custom modules must be maintained across Odoo's yearly version upgrades.
Both connect to websites, online stores, payment providers and WhatsApp through APIs. If you want AI on top of your ERP — reading invoices, automating approvals, answering staff questions about stock or orders — both can be extended; what matters is clean data and a partner who knows the system. Which one should you choose?
- Trading and distribution companies with many users: ERPNext usually wins on total cost.
- Manufacturers: both work; compare how each handles your bills of materials and costing in a demo with your own products.
- Retail and e-commerce businesses that want many ready-made apps: Odoo's marketplace is a real advantage.
- Holding companies with several subsidiaries: ERPNext includes multi-company at no extra license cost.
- Very small teams that want something running quickly: Odoo Online or a managed ERPNext instance are both fine.
How to decide in practice
- List your 10 most important daily processes (for example: quotation to invoice, purchase to payment, stock transfer, payroll).
- Ask for a demo of those exact processes in each system, using your own sample data.
- Calculate the 3-year cost: licenses, hosting, implementation, training and support.
- Check how your current data (customers, items, opening balances) will be migrated.
- Pick the partner as carefully as the software: most ERP projects fail because of poor setup, not the product.
Frequently asked questions
Is ERPNext really free?
The software is free and open source under GPL-3.0. You still pay for hosting, implementation, customization and support, but there are no per-user license fees.
Can we move from Odoo to ERPNext?
Yes. Customers, suppliers, items, opening balances and open documents can be exported from Odoo and imported into ERPNext. Plan the cut-over date with your accountant and reconcile balances before going live.
Which is easier for staff to learn?
Odoo's interface is often seen as more polished; ERPNext is clean and consistent once configured. In both cases, role-based training on the screens each person uses matters more than the product.
How long does an implementation take?
For a small or mid-sized company, typically a few weeks to a few months, depending on modules, number of companies, customizations and data quality.
